Ben Stokes, who missed the first half of IPL 2021 due to a finger injury, has decided to opt out of the IPL 2022 mega auctions so as to prioritise the upcoming England-West Indies series. He took a mental health break from cricket and missed the second half of IPL 2021 as well. He returned to the England squad for the Ashes, where they lost poorly against a strong Australian side.
According to London’s Evening Standard, “This year’s IPL competition, which will include ten teams for the first time and be preceded by a mega-auction with plenty of spots to fill, will be without Stokes. Stokes has had a rough few years, with the death of his father Ged 13 months ago leading to a long sabbatical in 2021 to focus on his mental health and repair a badly broken finger in the IPL. Sitting out will cost him a lot of money, but it will also give him time to mentally recharge between England’s Caribbean trip in March and the international summer in June”.
Ben Stokes’ decision falls in line with Root’s, who decided to opt out of the IPL 2022 auctions as well. Both these cricketers are immensely talented and their sacrifices for their national team is something that is needed right now as England needs a comeback after their Ashes series loss.
