During the first ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 match in Nottingham, both England and India were penalised two points apiece for slow over-rates. Under the new scoring system for the 2021-23 WTC cycle, each team now receives two points from the Test match, rather than the four they would typically receive for a tie.

After adjusting for time allowances, Match Referee Chris Broad found both teams two overs short of their targets, and both captains – England’s Joe Root and India’s Virat Kohli – were fined 40% of their match fees, as per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.

At Trent Bridge, the first Test between England and India ended in a draw. With the game evenly balanced, both teams were disappointed when the game was called off on the last day without a ball being bowled.

Because of the seam-and-swing-friendly pitch and overhead conditions at Trent Bridge, both teams opted for pace-heavy attacks, which contributed to the slow over rates. India selected four fast bowlers and one spinner, Ravindra Jadeja, whereas England selected four fast bowlers and no spinners. All but 16 of the 250.2 overs bowled throughout the Test match were sent down by the quicks.

The match was also plagued by continuous weather delays, as well as hitters who were not physically prepared to face the ball. On the second afternoon, as the light deteriorated, KL Rahul took his time settling into his position against James Anderson. Meanwhile, England’s batters made Mohammed Siraj wait on several occasions. Teams may pay a high price for over-rate-related point deductions during the WTC.

The two sides will now meet in the second Test at Lord’s on Thursday, August 12 in the hopes of improving their WTC standings.
