The Big Bash League has been shaken by a slew of COVID-19 cases, with the Melbourne Stars’ seven players and eight support staff members all receiving positive findings. The Sydney Thunder have also stated that four players have been placed on leave after testing positive for drugs.

“First and foremost, we wish everyone who has been impacted by this pandemic a fast recovery,” stated Stars general manager Blair Crouch. “Our players and staff’s health and safety will remain a top concern, particularly given the new Omicron variant’s problems. We are offering all of our assistance to the players, staff, and their families. I’d like to express my gratitude to the medical professionals at Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia for their continuous support and assistance.”

On January 1, all members of the Stars team who tested negative will go through another round of testing. They’ve already had one match postponed, against the Perth Scorchers, when a member of their support crew tested positive. In a statement, the club stated, “The Stars are now working with Cricket Australia in respect to their imminent match and will offer an update as soon as possible.”
