Misbah-ul-Haq resigned as head coach of the national team on Monday, according to a PCB source, due to disagreements over the selection of Pakistan’s T20 World Cup squad and being given a break from the home series against New Zealand, which he never requested.

Misbah, who arrived in Lahore on Sunday after a 10-day quarantine in the West Indies, met with Pakistan Cricket Board CEO Wasim Khan and was surprised to learn that the national squad for the upcoming home series and the World Cup had already been selected without his input, according to a reliable source.

Misbah is thought to have doubts about at least a couple of players in the squad, one of them being Azam Khan, whom he believes should not be in the team and informed Wasim Khan of his concerns.

After it became evident that Misbah and the PCB were going in opposite directions, Waqar Younis, the bowling coach, was also asked to go, according to the source. Both previous captains resigned, according to the PCB, citing onerous workloads and an inability to be away from their families for long periods of time due to the COVID-19 protocols.

Many in Pakistan cricket circles were taken aback by Azam Khan’s selection as reserve keeper and batsman in the T20 squad over former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed. Azam Khan, the eldest son of former Pakistan captain Moin Khan, has only played for his country once, in England.
