In the second Test against Sri Lanka, Rishabh Pant breaks Kapil Dev’s near-40-year record. On the second day of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant made the quickest Test fifty by an Indian batter, completing his half-century off 28 deliveries.

India expanded their 143-run first-inning advantage with some rapid scoring in their second innings after bowling Sri Lanka out for 109, early in the day’s play. Rishabh Pant, batting at No. 5, seized command of the innings and targeted the opposing bowlers, allowing India to consolidate its lead.

Pant smashed Kapil Dev’s almost 40-year record for the quickest Test fifty by an Indian batsman with his swift fifty. Kapil Dev scored a 30-ball half-century while batting against Pakistan in the Karachi Test in December 1982.

On Sunday, India raced through Sri Lanka lower order and bowled them for 109, with Jasprit Bumrah taking a fifer, his first in a home Test. On Day 2, Sri Lanka started batting at 86/6, but could only add 23 runs to their total. India got off to a good start, with Rohit Sharma hitting 46 and Hanuma Vihari chipping in with 35. Virat Kohli’s terrible batting streak continued when he was removed for 13 runs, identical to his LBW dismissal earlier in the innings. Kohli’s prized wicket was taken by Praveen Jayawickrama after the latter was fooled by the low bounce of a ball.
