Shane Watson is expected to join the Delhi Capitals coaching staff for the next Indian Premier League season (IPL). The former Australia all-rounder comes highly recommended by head coach Ricky Ponting, and just the signing formalities remain. The 40-year-old Queenslander, a two-time IPL champion (with Rajasthan Royals in 2008 and Chennai Super Kings in 2018), will serve as an assistant coach for the team, with a handful of his former teammates working under Ponting. Another assistant coach, Ajit Agarkar, is expected to be hired.
Praveen Amre, a former India batsman who has been a long-time part of the franchise’s support staff, is another assistant coach. The team, which is co-owned by GMR Industries and JSW Group, has parted ways with assistant coaches Mohammad Kaif and Ajay Ratra from last season. Coach Ponting and captain Rishabh Pant have reshuffled their coaching staff at a time when the squad is said to be seeking fresh ideas.
The squad, on the other hand, seems to be sticking with James Hopes, who was Ponting’s bowling coach. The squad may also hire a fielding coach, although no one has been chosen as of yet. Agarkar, who has played 26 Tests, 191 ODIs, and four T20Is, has agreed to join the team in principle as an assistant coach, according to Cricbuzz, although the franchise executives have yet to confirm it.
