In an effort to uphold the interest of Sri Lankan cricket, SLC has brought fresh rules for players who intend to retire from the game. Players who wish to take their retirement from international cricket will need to provide a notice of 3 months and will have to wait at least 6 months after retiring so as to get a No Objection Certificate to play in franchise-based leagues. A further requirement is also placed where the players have to play a minimum of 80% domestic matches so as to be qualified to play in the Lanka Premier League.

This move by SLC has seen the light of the day due to the recent retirements by Gunathalika and Rajapaksha which has created instability inside the team. Strict fitness policies by SLC has forced players to seek a better future in cricket in international leagues.

SLC has released a formal statement regarding this guideline which goes like this.

“National players who wish to retire from national cricket should provide Sri Lanka cricket three months’ notice of their desire to retire. Retired national players who wish to play in overseas franchise leagues will only be awarded No Objection Certificates (NOCs) if they have completed six months since their effective retirement date. Retired national players will only be regarded eligible for local leagues such as the LPL provided they have played 80 per cent of matches in domestic cricket competitions during the season before the league’s conduct”.
